Entryway Update Ideas: The Must-Have Features

The starting point

Can you relate to this picture? Does your entryway look like this? We can say it is anyone's house right now. This entrance hasn’t been updated in a while although it was probably painted recently.

It doesn't look old and the space is pretty nice. The ceiling looks high, there is lots of light and everything looks in good condition.

But it still looks plain. There is very little charm.

Let me take you there!

These are the two mood boards I designed for this space:

I ran a quick poll on Instagram to select a design for this post, and the winner was... actually the white one, but I'm obsessed with the green one, so I’ve decided to use it here.

Can you believe the difference? Oh yes... Breathe all that green in!

There are plenty of vintage calm vibes, with modern accents. I hope you like this design as much as I do.

But it is not only pretty or trendy. What makes it better than the initial one?

The two new features

The plain wall has now two new advantages that make it better:

  1. The long wall was turned into an accent wall. The dark color gives the space an inviting and cozy feel. Plus, it defines the space and becomes the focal point of the whole space. Read more about how to create an accent wall at home and design ideas here.

  2. The bench and pegs make the entryway functional for anyone entering the house. If the space permits, consider adding:

    • a bench, or space to sit or drop things

    • hooks for coats and bags

    • light, like a chandelier, sconces, a table or floor lamp

    • art or a mirror

    • greenery

The entryway is the first place that you and your visitors would step into when arriving at the house.

This is why it needs to be both functional - to leave any coats, bags, or shoes - and inviting and welcoming.

Updating your entrance, making it both functional and inviting, can create a space that makes you and anyone entering the house feel at home and welcome.
