How To Assemble and Stain Adirondack Chairs

The Chair

The Adirondack chair is an outdoor lounge chair with wide armrests, a tall slatted back, and a seat that is higher in the front than the back. It is named after the Adirondack Mountains, according to Wikipedia.

I got the Best Choice Products chairs. These are foldable and come unassembled and unfinished ($60ish vs $150/$200)

It is made of Hemlock wood (Chinese fir) that is much stronger and harder than pine.

It was indeed the best choice between building one, assembling one, or buying one that was already finished.

Assemble

The only 3 tips for the assembly:

  • Get an electric drill

  • Layout all the pieces (marked with letters) in an organized way

  • When a screw is difficult to get into the wood, drill the way for it (this happened only a few times, but it helps to avoid the wood to break)

Stain

For the stain, I was planning to use Deck stain that I had leftover from my deck, intending to match the color of the chairs and the deck.

Then I learned deck stain is the best option for this kind of wood!

The stain I used was Benjamin Moore® ARBORCOAT Semi Transparent Classic Oil Finish, C328 06 Tint Base.

Tips for the staining:

  • Mix very well before starting. This was an old stain and it was very diluted on top.

  • Work in the shade, it will dry faster.

  • Apply a thin layer.

PS: Lights are solar! Highly recommended!
