How Many House Plants Are Too Many?

Do you own many plants or just a few? Are you an accidental plant murderer? No matter in what stage you are in your plant collection -the truth is- there is always room for one more.

Why using indoor plants to decorate is a good idea

There are so many reasons to use plants at home, starting with the most important of all: plants will make you happy. It's not just my idea, there are many studies about it.

They also help to filter the air from toxins, reduce stress levels, and boost your productivity, among other science-backed reasons.

From a design point of view, they add a pop of color in a natural and pleasing way. Also, a big plant can be a statement in a room, breaking the lines. This is especially convenient in a plain room without any architectural features.

If you don't trust yourself in taking care of a living plant, or you are out of home often, artificial plants might be your answer. (Jump to Amazon links of good-looking artificial plants!)

How to do it the right way

At your house, the right way is the way you like it. Here I will share as inspiration, ideas to add plants to any room in your house.

Dining room plants

Mostly being displayed as a centerpiece on the dining table, in a corner filling up an empty space, or on a server or console if you have one.

The centerpiece plays an important role in terms of design. Take a look at the first and the last pictures. Can you notice how -in the first picture- the centerpiece helps to elevate the view to the chandelier? This doesn't happen with the empty table in the last picture.

To carry the eye from the floor to the ceiling is how a designer ensures visual flow in the room. Feel free to check out the post "Arrange Your Dining Room Like an Interior Designer" for more design tips!

Living room plants

This is the more natural space to incorporate a plant since the living room is usually the biggest space in the house.

Big plants can be placed in empty corners, becoming the focal point of the room. You can go as dramatic as you can imagine.

In the case of having a fireplace, mantels are a great place to add small to medium-sized plants.

If you have a small living room without a fireplace, a coffee table or a side table are perfect spots to add plants, flowers, or greenery.

Bedroom plants

You don't need a big room to add some green: try orchids on a nightstand or low dresser, Philodendrons on shelves for a bohemian and relaxed look, or any other surface like your windowsills, that receive plenty of sunlight!

Bathroom Plants

A bathroom can be a perfect environment for some plants because it is usually warm and humid. Before adding plants, you can check which varieties would do better in these conditions (I just learned the hard way that succulents won't enjoy it!).

Kitchen Plants

Couldn't be more appropriate to add life to the heart of the house! Think about greenery decorating an island, countertops, or even a herb garden at hand for cooking.
