Here you'll find:

  • A list of the #9 essential furniture and decor items for a nursery

  • Interior design tips to make it look like a pro! (take me there)

  • Links to all of these baby items that you can buy on Amazon

If you have been looking for baby essentials, probably you have a huge list of items to buy. As a mom of three, I can tell you, keep it simple! You do not need all the things recommended. Start with the basics, and as you go, you can always get whatever you see that you really need (save your money: I never had a hamper for the baby's room, or extra baskets.. even mobiles are not that useful, since they are in the way when you need to pick up you baby from the crib).

Here, the #9 items you see in this calm nursery, white walls and all, by an Interior Designer mom.

1. Crib and bedding

Needless to say, the most essential piece of furniture. Place the crib on the widest wall of the room, since it will be probably the largest piece.

This crib was the starting point in this design. The bedding tries to add some white to lighten up the space (with the other lighted color items).

In case you don't have much room, I added a mini crib. I had one with my last baby, and it was perfect because it didn't take much space! The con: the baby grows it faster!

2. Low dresser and changing pad

If you have space, believe me, this is good! You store all baby clothes in there, diapers and baby needs. Everything is organized and out of sight.

And the top serves as a changing table. I'm linking these leather handles and the pretty basket.

Note how these earthy accents add warmth to the design.

3. Rocking chair

The gray rocking chair with the white and leather cushion ties all the furniture together.

4. Blackout Window Curtains

Curtains serve both as extremely functional -since controlling the light in the baby's room is essential- and as decoration, done the right way.

Always use a high rod curtain (like shown in the picture), extended about 1 ft from the end of the window. The curtain panels need to go from the floor to the ceiling, just touching the side window's frame and the floor (unlike this picture, the curtain should touch the floor, and break the lines).

For wide, 52'' always fits better, especially if you are using the curtains to cover the window. If you go for narrow ones, it will look flat against the window when extended.

For long, 96'' should work. If you find it too long and want to avoid cutting them, you can use rod clips, and fold the top part, until the desired length! DIY at its best!

5. Chandelier

This gorgeous chandelier, antique white and gray, helps to tie together the room. This baby is a king!

6. Rug

When placing a rug consider that the crib's front legs should be on the rug. However, a room can have many sizes and different furniture layouts.

Now... the fun part! How to decorate a nursery? And this applies actually to any room in your house.

Consider the same room, with and without the 3 decorative items: the art above the crib, the tree, and the shelf by the dresser. It looks like a very pretty room, with color-coordinated furniture.

But it's lacking something. It is heavy in the bottom with all the big furniture pieces and feels empty in the upper half. The room looks divided in half.

When we add the decorative pieces, your eye can be carried from the floor to the ceiling.

This is one of the biggest interior design tricks. Now you see it!

7. Framed art

This face stole my heart and, after the crib, was the second pick. The white, gray, and wood add everything we need in this baby's room. I'm adding a link with some more girly options too!

Also, if using more than one frame, try to cover no more than 2/3 of the crib's wide.

8. Olive Tree

Accessories bring to life the space, especially plants! Artificial plants are a great option if you don't feel that confident about taking care of natural ones. Try to get one that looks as real as possible, and you can always add real dirt on the bottom to help it look more real!

9. Wall Shelves

Books or toys nearby became handy when changing the baby!

These walnut colored shelves match the leather accents. Also, they help to carry the eye from the floor to the ceiling on the dresser wall.
